The genus Aeromonas belongs to the Aeromonadaceae family. More than 21 species have been described, which are grouped into three main complexes: A. hydrophila, A. caviae, A. veronii. It is a mobile, ubiquitous gram-negative bacillus, found in water sources, soil, arthropods, mollusks, mammals, birds, fish and insects. Aeromonas spp. It is a common cause of gastroenteritis but occasionally it can cause extraintestinal infections. Infections in humans are mainly of oral or cutaneous acquisition, by consumption of contaminated food and water or by contact with contaminated water or colonized pets or wild animals. The main clinical manifestations are diarrhea and skin and soft tissue infections; bacteremia and sepsis, mainly in patients with hepatobiliary diseases, cancer, chemotherapy or neutropenia.
