Bordetella pertussis is a Gram-negative, aerobic, non motile coccobacillus and the causative agent of Pertussis or whooping cough, an acute infectious illness of the respiratory tract. The initial symptoms, very similar to the common cold, usually develop about a week after exposure to the bacteria. Severe episodes of coughing start about 10 to 12 days later.
